CSIRO and CHORUS Collaborate on Pilot to Measure and Monitor the Use of CSIRO Resources and Facilities

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (“CSIRO”), an Australian Government Agency, and CHOR, Inc. (CHORUS) have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a workflow to measure and monitor the use of CSIRO resources and facilities.

CHORUS and CSIRO will work together on a three-year Pilot Project that brings together stakeholders from across the scholarly communications ecosystem to identify and monitor CSIRO Research Resources acknowledgements in publisher research outputs. As part of this project, CHORUS will provide CSIRO with agency and institution dashboard and reporting services.

Jack Steele, Director Science Impact and Policy at CSIRO, explained: “CSIRO makes its resources and facilities available for the use of the broader research system. It is important to improve how we monitor and report this to demonstrate return on public investment. We are excited to partner with CHORUS on this project, because of its knowledge and experience and its connections across the scholarly communications ecosystem. Any monitoring workflows developed will not only be of benefit to CSIRO but potentially for similar research-based organizations around the world.”

Howard Ratner, Executive Director of CHORUS, noted: “Measuring the use of resources and facilities is a logical extension of CHORUS’ monitoring services. We welcome the opportunity to work with CSIRO on this pilot project to develop solutions for CSIRO’s monitoring requirements which will also further our own goals to support discoverability in scholarly communications through leveraging common infrastructure and metadata.”

Together, CHORUS and CSIRO have an important contribution to make to the scholarly community in coordinating efforts to adopt identifiers and standards to manage access to and reporting of research outputs.
