| Many universities and research institutes provide shared instrumentation and core facilities to support research and data generation. Tracking datasets, research articles and other outputs from these services is critical for facilities to demonstrate their impact, identify service gaps, and justify their funding. Tracking these outputs can be a challenging and surprisingly complex process, however, with varied practices across research communities. Transparency and reproducibility of research produced via complex instrumentation and facilities is likewise challenging. To address these issues, research organizations are adopting persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research instruments, platforms, and facilities. PIDs for scientific facilities, platforms, and instruments support transparency and enhance the discoverability of existing instruments, equipment, and data, in turn streamlining scientific research production and open science practices. Panellists will provide their insights on high-level guidance and best practices for implementing instrument, platform, and facility PIDs, along with specific recommendations tailored to various stakeholders, including data repositories, libraries, funders, and scholarly publishers. The session will also touch on management and responsibilities related to PIDs in times of change, when research facilities and instruments face uncertain futures. |
