JST/CHORUS FORUM: PREPRINTS – TRENDS, CHALLENGES, AND POLICY CONSIDERATIONS

In recent times there has been rapid growth in the number of preprint platforms and the posting of preprints by researchers. Alongside the growth of open access publications, the adoption of FAIR principles for research data, and the setting of open science policies are transforming scholarly communication, researchers, funders, publishers, and institutions are increasingly recognizing the role of preprints in accelerating the dissemination and discovery of research. Libraries have an important role in helping researchers understand the place of preprints within the scholarly record while navigating the challenges associated with their use. This includes supporting research integrity, helping researchers and other users understand the appropriate role of preprints within the research lifecycle, integrating preprints into library services, and responding to evolving funder and institutional expectations.

This JST/CHORUS Forum brings together representatives from across the scholarly communications ecosystem to examine the changing landscape of preprints and discuss the opportunities and challenges they present for libraries. Rather than advocating a single approach to the use of preprints, the Forum will present a range of perspectives on national and subject-based preprint platforms in the context of open science policies, emerging publishing models, and the impact of generative AI on preprint quality, screening, and trust. Through presentations and discussion, participants will gain practical insights and examples to help their institutions develop policies, services, and guidance that reflect their own research environments while supporting researchers and maintaining confidence in the scholarly record.
